You may need a reliable and fair contractor in order to apply for your home owners insurance claim. But its not easy to find one because there are some contractors who keep eyes on others problems and they can exploit you. These people may approach you to offer some business.

Its not true that all of them are selfish because there are some fair and reliable contractors so protect yourself from fake ones. There are some precautionary measures for you:
1. Just contact your insurance company and ask them to tell you about your insurance adjuster that they have assigned you for estimating your loss and damage. If you know about your details then no one could make you fool.
2. Ask your contractor to provide references before they start to work for you. You should ask your close friends and neighbors to refer you a contractor if they know any reliable contractor. And make sure that the contractor you hired is the member of your town’s Homebuilder’s Association and the Better Business Bureau.
You also must confirm that your contractor is license holder and your contractor must be insured. And if they are not insured then you will be responsible for accidents that may happen to your property.
3. Always sign paper after reading them thoroughly that is provided by your contractor to you. Confirm that contract is written well and relevant to the work that the contractor will be done to you. Check the cancellation policy and make sure that if it allows you three business days to cancel your contract. Confirm that the completion date is included in that contract or not and you can also ask your lawyer to help you.
4. Always be attentive whenever your contractor gives suggestions on temporary repairs. Keep yourself away from contractors that offer you lower estimates.
5. Never pay in advance to your contractor for the project he is handling for you until your your work is done. And always pay by checks so that it will be saved as a receipt.
6. Keep all your necessary documents and communication proofs in a file. Keep in record all the signed contracts, bills and invoices, cancelled checks, certificate copies of insurance and other information that is closely related to your work.
