COUNTY LEGISLATURE: Lawmakers told to forego on appeal of AES decision
A pair of county attorneys on Tuesday advised lawmakers against pursuing an appeal of a judge's decision on the AES tax break deal.Niagara County Attorney Claude Joerg and Assistant County Attorney R. Joseph Foltz warned members of the Legislature's Administration Committee that appealing the decision of State Supreme Court Judge Richard C. Kloch may not only prove costly, but risky as well. Joerg said he saw little chance of the State Appellate Division finding Kloch made "substantial" errors in his ruling on the controversial payment-in-lieu-of-taxes (PILOT) agreement with AES. He added that the county could incur significant legal costs for the appeal and suggested that it would be a duplication of services, considering the Town of Somerset is already pursuing similar legal action. "I wouldn't recommend spending the money on trying to overturn Judge Kloch's decision," Joerg said.Democratic lawmakers Harry Apolito, Dennis Virtuoso, Sean O'Connor and Renae Kimble introduced into committee a resolution asking the county attorney's office to file a notice of appeal in the case. First QuickTime patch of 2008
All told, Apple patched more than 30 flaws in QuickTime last year. Apple also issued 2008's first iPhone update, dubbed 1.1.3, which included three patches for problems in the device's stripped-down version of the Safari browser, as well as in its Passcode Lock, a feature designed to prevent applications from running unless a special code is entered.
Only one of the three can result in arbitrary code execution, claimed the iPhone's security advisory. The other two could let unauthorised users access locked applications or reveal personal information in a Web-based cross-site scripting attack, which are favoured by phishers.
The iPhone patches also apply to the iPod Touch, the music player-cum-wireless-Internet-device that resembles the smart phone. More>>
